As the famous Timothy Ferriss quote goes: “you are the product of the five people you spend the most time with.” This quote means that the people in your immediate social circle are a good representation of your values, career, money, social activities, etc. In other words, the people you surround yourself with shape your reality. It’s essential to understand how to find the right people who will feed your life, not deplete it.

Look to your close relationships — are the people you surround yourself with conducive to the successes you want in life? And do they bring out the best in you?

If you are not happy with the support your current support system provides, it may be time to free yourself from any negative relationships holding you back from reaching your full potential. It can be difficult to forge new friendships as an adult, and putting yourself out there often feels a little awkward. If you step outside your comfort zone now, your future self will thank you later. It’s time to work with others who will help you find the best version of yourself.

By surrounding yourself with the right people, you reach new heights of success in work and personal well-being, leading to a deep and meaningful life.

Weed Out The Wrong People First

Before you begin looking for the right people to connect with, first identify who in your circle is holding you back. It sounds harsh, but in reality, you are making necessary adjustments to optimize your life. You only get one life, so spend it with people who lift you up instead of bringing you down. Evaluate your current group for the following:

Sluggers – The sluggers or slackers are those non-ambitious people who would rather take the easy way out and not work too hard. Sluggers drag the productive energy down. You want to surround yourself with people who are ambitious, have grit, and are problem solvers.

Naysayers – Everyone knows these people; they are quick to criticize and slow to praise. Holding judgment can be good, and offering a strong opinion is an excellent quality to have, yet naysayers tend to focus on the negative most of the time.

Envious – These people usually stick out like a sore thumb (e.g., backhanded compliments, jealousy, passive aggressiveness). You want people who are positive support systems and can offer genuine happiness for your successes without casting shadows over your achievements. If you recognize anyone being envious, usually, it is rooted in insecurity.

After identifying the wrong ones, you can begin filling your cup with quality connections.

How to Find the Right People

Surrounding yourself with those who want to accomplish goals, reach their personal potential, and positively support you takes action. Keep the following tips in mind:

Hire the right people

One way to find people who build you up is to hire those people. Find people whose strengths are your weaknesses. Prioritize soft skills and surround your business with those who represent your business values and growth.

Network with other business owners

There are many networking opportunities for business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. These events aim to make connections and build relationships with the right people. Look for an event that fits your criteria, so you don’t waste time in the wrong rooms.

Join a mastermind group

If you are looking for a group of other business owners, CEOs, and C-level executives who are all working together for a common goal – growth, and success – then a mastermind group is what you want. Find people who know more than you, people who can help you grow personally and professionally, and people who are ready to collaborate and support your goals. Get involved and give back

People come together for many different causes and hobbies. If you are interested in cycling, your community probably has a great cycling group. If you want to get involved with helping the homeless, there are others in your community working towards that same effort. It is up to you to reach out, connect, and get involved in doing something you love with like-minded individuals.
